Part One: The Unexpected Visitor
Knock! Knock! Knock!
I answer the door. And as I open it, I’m left in disbelief of who I see.
“Miss me, Braylon?” He says with a smirk on face.
I respond, “D, What are you doing here? I thought we made a deal?”
“That may be the case Braylon, but I just couldn’t stay away. I heard you were having some troubles lately; I just wanted to see if you wanted to revisit the offer I made you that night?”
I feel my body tense up and it feels as if I’m about to faint, I muster the strength to reply, “The… offer…”
He responds, “You… know… the offer… of…”
Before D could finish his sentence, I interrupt by saying, “I know what offer you’re referring to.”
“Well, shall I come in so we can discuss it again?” He asks.
I stand there frozen in disbelief. I wonder how could this be possible. How is it that D is standing at my door right now; I thought we had agreed to sever our friendship. Eventually, without saying a word, I step aside and let him inside.
As he looks around he says, “You know it was hard tracking you down since you moved off campus, but…”
He pauses for a moment and glances around. He doesn’t have to say it; I can tell what he’s thinking just by his mannerisms. I know he’s taking note of the fact that I’m not as successful as I said I was going to be the last time we talked.
D continues to say, “I can see not much has changed.”
I can sense his sarcasm in his voice. And his smile, it’s not one that I had ever wish to see again… it’s so condescending.
As he takes a seat, I tell him, “You know, I’ve thought about that offer a few times since that night. But lately, honestly, I’ve thought about reaching out to you to see if it was still an option.”
“Braylon, you’re not the first to person to walk away from me only to come back later. I mean… my offer is such a great offer who wouldn’t give it a second chance? But to answer your question, yes, the offer is still available… take your life and the pain will be over.”
Without saying a word, I walk over to the window and just stare outside. I make no effort to make an immediate decision; I let silence fill the room. D doesn’t beg for an immediate answer. He just waits patiently.
It’s undeniable that as I stare out the window, the weight of the room, the weight of the offer intensifies.
I break the silence, “Oh, how rude of me. I may not appreciate your unexpected visit, but I mustn’t forget my manners. Would you like anything to drink?”
